Air-cooled and water-cooled chiller units: Which one is more suitable for your project?

Category: Blogs

When planning an HVAC system for a commercial or industrial building, a key decision often lies in the choice between an Air-Cooled Chiller or a Water-Cooled Chiller. This is not only about the type of equipment, but also affects the installation cost, operational efficiency, maintenance ease and long-term operational performance of the project.

This article will help you understand the core differences and applicable scenarios in plain language so that you can find the best solution for your project.

Heat Dissipation Principles of the Two Systems

Air-cooled chiller

Air-cooled systems remove heat from the system by blowing outdoor air through the condensing coils through a fan - essentially using air as a heat dissipation medium.

Advantages: simple structure, no cooling tower, small footprint, easy installation.

Disadvantages: Because the system directly transfers heat to ambient air (dry bulb temperature), the condensation pressure is relatively high, the compressor load is greater, and the overall energy efficiency is usually slightly lower than that of water cooled systems.

Water-cooled chiller

The water cooling system will transfer the heat to the circulating water through the heat exchange pipe in the condenser; This cooling water then flows to the cooling tower (or dry cooler), and eventually exhausts the heat to the atmosphere.

Advantages: Compressor efficiency is higher due to lower condensation temperature, especially suitable for large projects.

Disadvantages: The system is more complex, requiring cooling tower, water pump and supporting pipelines, high initial investment, maintenance is more cumbersome.

Key Comparison: What to Consider

Factor Air-Cooled Water-Cooled
Installation complexity & footprint Simpler. Outdoor condenser, no tower. Ideal when water is scarce.  More complex. Needs tower, water treatment, space for pumps.
Efficiency & operating cost Efficiency is good, but often less than water-cooled under challenging ambient conditions.  Higher efficiency (especially in large systems) because of lower condensing temperature.
Water usage & maintenance Uses no cooling water. Lower maintenance in that regard.  Requires cooling tower water, chemical treatment and higher maintenance.
Suitable capacity / load size Often used for small to medium loads.  Designed for larger capacity plants; scaling up often favours water-cooled.
Site and climate suitability Great when water is limited and ambient air access is good. But in very hot/dry climates efficiency may suffer.  Especially efficient where heat rejection can approach wet-bulb temperature (e.g., less hot ambient or with good tower performance).

Selection Suggestions for Different Scenarios

  • In areas with scarce water resources or high water extraction costs, choose air-cooled chiller units.
  • Large construction, the continuous operation load high places (such as hotel, data center, factory) to give priority to the water cooling system.
  • Installed roof or room space is limited, the pursuit of simple and air cooling system is more flexible.
  • For projects with high energy efficiency requirements and cooling tower conditions, water cooling system is more advantageous.
  • Focus on simplicity and long-term reliability - air cooling systems are usually more economical and practical.

Practical Checklist before Selection

  1. Before deciding on a system solution, we recommend that you consider the following questions:
  2. What is the cooling load and operating duration of the project?
  3. The balance point between initial investment and long-term energy consumption?
  4. Are there reliable water sources and conditions for installing cooling towers?
  5. What are the climatic characteristics of the project area (dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures)?
  6. Are there sufficient maintenance personnel and water treatment conditions?

The answers to these questions will help you precisely match the most appropriate type of refrigeration system.

Why is choosing the Right System crucial for a project?

At ZERO, we offer a full range of air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, allowing customers the flexibility to choose according to project conditions. If the project is located in a hot climate with limited water resources, our air-cooled module machine can operate stably in high temperature environment. If the project is a large commercial complex, hotel or factory, our water-cooled chillers can achieve centralized cooling with higher energy efficiency.

Hot-climate

Each system is optimized and matched by the ZERO engineering team from the design drawings to the actual operating conditions to ensure cooling performance, ease of installation, and long-term reliability.

Conclusion: Find the "just right" solution for the project

No single chiller is suitable for all projects.

The best system is the one that best fits your building, budget, climate and operating conditions. With the right choice, your HVAC system will provide years of efficient, reliable comfort for your project.
